For over a century, the Greek Postal Savings Bank has been a pioneering force in banking, entirely devoted to the service of Greek people and society. Founded in 1900, it has always aimed at social contribution and at the creation of a long-term tradition of prestige and credibility, a characteristic that is evident even today.

Since the very first decades of its operation, the Greek Postal Savings Bank appealed to Greek people of every socioeconomic class and gained their trust, by safeguarding an important part of everyday Greeks’ savings.

These savings formed a significant national resource that has been diligently preseved and invested by the Greek Postal Savings Bank in its effort to contribute to the country’s development and its citizens, even during the country’s most challenging periods in its history.


Greek Postal Savings Bank’s historical path:

  • 1900: The first operation of the Greek Postal Savings Bank begins in Crete, before the island’s unification with the mainland
  • 1902: Official starting of Greek Postal Savings Bank’s turnover
  • 1909: The Greek Postal Savings Bank operates all over Greece
  • 1914-1915: The Organization’s headquarters are transferred in Athens
  • 1929-1934: A period of impressive progress
  • 1930: Getting the biggest part in savings
  • 1936: Participation the World Savings Day
  • 1938: A record of savings: 2,6 billion drachmas
  • 1939: People’s banking policy changes, because of the forthcoming war
  • 1944-1954: The difficult War Years for the Greek Postal Savings Bank
  • 1960: A special regulation – only for the Greek Postal Savings Bank’s customers – gives the opportunity for a new bank account to people who were account holders before World War II Occupation
  • 1961: The beginnings of the “Golden Age” of banking in Greece
  • 1970: The Organization’s quota in total savings exceeds 31%, with a savings amounting to 21 billion drachmas. The headquarters move to Pesmazoglou and Aristeidou Street.
  • 2002: The Organization becomes a S.A. (L.3082/ 2002)
  • 2003: Home credit products start being provided beyond the public sector
  • 2004: Operation expands to retail banking
  • 2005: Τhe Greek Postal Savings Bank is forming a new dynamic character that maintains its social dimension, getting ready for its accession to the Athens Stock Exchange

The Greek Postal Savings Bank is moving on with collective effort, a definite plan and a clear, unambiguous vision for the future.
