How is the IBAN structured?
In Greece, IBAN has a standard length of 27 alphanumeric characters, where:
- the first two alphabetic characters indicate the country where the account is held
- for Greece, these characters are GR
- the two following characters are check digits that validate whole IBAN
- last part of the IBAN is the Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN), which contains identification of the Bank, the Branch and the Customer’s Account Number.
For example: In Greece, the BBAN consists of:
- The Bank’s code (3 digits)
- The Branch’s code (4 digits)
- The customer’s Account Number (16 digits)
So, in Greece the BBAN is: 01101250000000012300695
This number can be converted to IBAN, by prefixing the country’s code and the two check digits before the BBAN as follows:
GR: country’s code
16: check digits
01101250000000012300695: Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN)
Finally, the IBAN is fixed: GR1601101250000000012300695. » Back to FAQ |
